Helpful Tips on Leak Detection – Finding the Problem
Detecting a leak is one of the best ways to stop them in their tracks and save your home. Because we, at Biernacki Mechanical Svcs LLC, know that finding leaks before they become a problem isn’t always the easiest task, we put together a few helpful tips that will help you with effective leak detection.
Check Your Toilets
The first thing you should do is to check your toilets. The toilets use up large amounts of water. And when there is a leak, the water usage soars even higher. To detect a leak in a toilet, remove the lid from the tank. Then listen for any hissing sounds. If you hear any, try to find the leak using your ears. If there’s no noticeable hissing sound, add some red food coloring to the toilet’s tank. You only need to add in a couple of drops. Wait a couple of minutes and then check the toilet bowl. If the water in the bowl has turned a pink color, then there is a leak. This is typically down to the flapper. Make sure to check all your toilets the same way.
Check the Hot Water Tank
Now, go to your hot water tank and check the pressure relief valve. This may be located in a drain, which makes it harder to detect a leak. Remove the drain pipe, if this is not an option, then listen closely for the same hissing sound from the toilets. If you hear it, there is a leak. You must call in a professional plumber if you have found a leak within your hot water tank. Another good way to check for a leak in a hot water tank is to look for any sitting water at the bottom of the tank. Also, check for moisture on the base of the discharge tube.
